What is the Level 2 SVQ in Team Leading?
The Level 2 SVQ in Team Leading is a management qualification accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
The qualification aims to give participants an opportunity to develop the core competences needed by today’s team leaders. Participants take four mandatory units (which look at managing resources, health and safety, developing working relationships and leadership) plus two optional units. The wide choice of optional units gives a high level of flexibility, allowing the qualification to be tailored to meet the varying needs of participants and employers across all employment sectors.
Who is it for?
The SQA Level 2 SVQ in Team Leading has been specially designed for team leaders, (i.e. people who have limited authority for managing resources) that are looking to motivate their team members and achieve agreed outcomes.
There are no formal entry qualifications. However, as this is a practical, work-based qualification, participants must be performing the job role of team leader within their company. Participants will undertake an initial assessment to determine the appropriate SVQ level, and the most appropriate optional units.
Structure and Content of the SVQ programmes
The 2004 National Occupational Standards in Management & Leadership, which form the basis of this qualification, have been devised by employers and provide benchmarks of good practice. They are structured around six functional areas of management:
A. Manage Self & Personal Skills
B. Providing Direction
C. Facilitating Change
D. Working with People
E. Using Resources
F. Achieving Results
How long does it take?
SVQs must be assessed over time. Typically a Level 2 SVQ in Team Leading will take 6-9 months, although some participants will achieve in less time. The maximum allowed is 3 years.
SVQs are assessed when a participant provides evidence that he/she meets the required standard. The evidence often comes in the form of a portfolio prepared by the participant. Each participant is assigned an Assessor with whom they meet regularly to help develop their knowledge and practice of team leadership skills, identify and present evidence, and prepare assessment.
Participants must complete the 4 mandatory units and choose 2 optional units from a list of 7.

- A1 Manage your own resources
- B5 Provide leadership for your team
- D1 Develop productive working relationships with your colleagues
